Your Customers Shouldn’t Be Your Network Monitoring System

Imagine you’re sitting on a plane when you notice something alarming outside your window: a piece of the wing is sparking.

You flag down a flight attendant. They alert the cockpit. Action is taken.

But somewhere in the back of your mind, a question lingers: How did I see this before the pilots flying the plane?

You’d expect the aircraft’s sensors and systems to detect a problem like that, and alert the crew, long before a passenger has to point it out. That’s the whole point of all those instruments in the cockpit. The crew should be notifying you that they’ve identified an issue and have it under control. Not the other way around. Fortunately, planes are equipped with a multitude of sensors that catch problems long before they’re visible.

But this is essentially how many broadband networks still operate today.

Of course, broadband service degradations aren’t the same as an aircraft malfunction. Most of the time, the stakes aren’t life or death. But sometimes connectivity matters a lot more than whether Netflix buffers. It’s the telehealth appointment where a physician is delivering a diagnosis. The 911 dispatcher working remotely. The student taking a final. The job interview that could change someone’s life.

And regardless of the stakes, connectivity now powers nearly every essential part of modern life. Why are so many providers still relying on subscribers to sound the alarm?

The Customer Complaint as the First Alert

Too often, the first signal that something is wrong comes from the subscriber:

  • “I keep getting kicked out of zoom calls.”
  • “Hulu recently started buffering in the evenings.”
  • “My nest camera often fails to playback events.”

By the time that call comes in, two things have already happened. The experience has been disrupted. And the customer’s confidence in their provider has taken a hit.

That’s not a support problem. It’s a visibility problem. But even deeper, it’s a correlation of your visibility problem.

The underlying issue could be many things: congestion, peering path changes, wifi signal loss, an overloaded content host, or a recurring network condition that disappears before anyone has a chance to investigate it. And without the right intelligence, the operations team is left guessing — or worse, waiting for the next complaint to tell them where to look.


What Service Degradation Actually Looks Like

Unlike a complete outage, which is hard to miss, service degradation is subtle. It doesn’t knock a customer offline. It just makes their experience worse.

It shows up as:

  • Reduced throughput: Speeds are noticeably lower than expected, causing slow downloads and sluggish uploads.
  • High latency: A delay in data traveling across the network, making websites feel unresponsive or online games feel laggy.
  • Retries and Packet loss: Data packets fail to reach their destination, causing frozen screens, choppy video and audio, and interrupted sessions.
  • Intermittent connectivity: The connection repeatedly drops and reconnects, creating an unpredictable and frustrating experience.

None of these are dramatic. But all of them drive churn. Especially when they happen over and over again and operators don’t monitor them.

The frustrating part is that degradation often looks different depending on what the customer is doing. Streaming a match, joining a video call, and loading a webpage each put different demands on the network. A condition that wrecks one experience may barely affect another, until it gets worse.

Detecting What’s Actually Happening
